Cytomel is the commonly associated brand name for the synthetic thyroid hormone Liothyronine Sodium. This is a replica of triiodothyronine, or what is commonly referred to as the T3 hormone, the naturally occurring Thyroid hormone. Cytomel has been available since the 50’s, and have been used medicinally since the 1890’s.
T3 has a profound effect on the basal metabolic rate through stimulation. This will involve many cellular functions including the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
It generally only takes a low dose of Cytomel to treat hypothyroidism. This will not necessarily promote enhanced fat loss, but it should return the metabolism back to proper working order. Performance enhancing athletes enjoy using Cytomel due to the fact that at the doses taken, it will have a direct impact on fat loss. It’s use in conjunction with a calorie restricted diet will promote a significant and augmented rate of fat loss.
The use of T3 for enhanced fat loss is not recommended without the use of AAS. This is a very powerful fat loss tool but by no means is it flawless. Some athletes find that Cytomel can cause lethargy, which isn’t surprising, since it feeds off of crude ATP. Due to the necessarily higher doses needed to promote enhanced fat loss and due to the depletion of ATP, this can promote lean tissue loss. For this exact reason it is crucial that if you are using Cytomel for rapid and enhanced weight loss, it would be greatly advised to run an AAS along with it.

The typical side affects you can expect are:
  • Headache
  • Sweating
  • Irregular-Heartbeat
  • Nervousness
  • Increased Bowel Motility
  • Menstrual Irregularities
Extremely high doses of the T3 hormone can also lead to potential complications. The side effects include:
  • Angina
  • Shock
  • Congestive Heart Failure
  • Hyperthyroidism
If taken responsibly Cytomel can be a very safe thyroid medication, but with abuse, particularly high doses, you can impact your thyroid for life and potentially encounter life threatening effects.
Typically, performance enhancing athletes will run doses will be similar to people being treated for hypothyroidism. Most will begin with 25 mcg per day and increase the total dose 12.5-25 mcg every 2-4 weeks as needed and seldom will you need to go as high as or above 75-100 mcg per day. The duration of use should generally be in the 6 – 10-week range with 6-8 weeks being the safest.
When you are ready to stop the use of T3, it is best practice to drop your dose 12.5 – 25 mg and hold at that dose for 7-10 days then repeat. This allows your body to adjust to the new dosage and will be more beneficial in obtaining your natural levels once again.
