Synthetic T4 has been in existence for almost 90 years, being synthesized in 1927 by British researchers. It was later used in the treatment of various thyroid disorders, such as hypothyroidism and goiters. Even today, it remains one of the most frequently prescribed thyroid medications on the market.

T4 (L-Thyroxine) is a synthetically manufactured thyroid hormone similar to that of natural L-thyroxin (L-T4) in the thyroid gland. LT4 has about 60% of its make up converted to one of two types of T3. (40%) active LT3 and (20%) rT3. rT3 is of no consequence because it is an inactive form and unusable by the body. During high stress times, such as surgeries, rT3 will become elevated and this is at the expense of T3. This can slow metabolism down significantly.
Bodybuilders use L-Thyroxine to accelerate the metabolizing of carbohydrates, proteins, and fat. The body burns more calories than usual so that a lower fat content can be achieved, or the athlete burns fat although he takes in more calories.
When used properly there are few side effects to L-Thyroxine. Dosages that are too high and, in particular, dosages that are increased too quickly and too early can cause trembling of the fingers, excessive perspiration, diarrhea, insomnia, nausea, increased heartbeat, inner unrest, and weight loss.

One of two thyroid hormones produced by the thyroid gland, T4 serves as a regulator of whole-body metabolism. Every cell in the body is dependent on these hormones for proper metabolic functioning, making their presence critical for the maintenance of human life. In addition to enhanced fat loss, which is the main reason most BB’rs supplement with T4, it is also capable of increasing protein synthesis. In order to reap the benefits of increased protein synthesis (muscle growth), it is essential that the dose remain on the conservative side. Otherwise, the excessive elevation of one’s metabolic rate will foster an environment more conducive to muscle catabolism than muscle hypertrophy. T4 also possesses the ability to up-regulate beta 2 receptors, which are the same receptors activated by Clenbuterol and Ephedrine. This will allow one to cycle Clen/Ephedrine more frequently and/or extend one’s cycle, if needed. Still, one should not lose sight of the fact that T4’s primary job is to mediate metabolism and therefore, its use should mirror that fact.
