Daniel Duchaine (1952 – January 12, 2000) was an American bodybuilder who gained the nicknamed the “Steroid Guru”. He was very outspoken when it comes to his opinions on Steroids or any other performance enhancing drug. Daniel Duchaine authored and published the “Underground Steroid Handbook which is widely recognized in the Bodybuilding industry with professionals and amateurs alike. He also authored many other books in his lifetime. Duchaine appeared on numerous television programs discussing the subject. The author of Steroid Nation, Shaun Assael, calls Duchaine "a founding father of the steroid movement." Duchaine was also a very big advocate of what he called the “Body Opus” diet and had his own opinions on what a post cycle therapy should look like.
While still in college, Duchaine began training as a competitive bodybuilder. This would have been around 1977. He has stated that he was never very good at it so he talk the family physician into prescribing steroids as a training tool. But he obviously was doing something wrong he said, because he still wasn’t any good. It was this lack of finesse with steroids and bodybuilding that truly prompted the “Steroid Guru” to began researching steroids. We should all be like this in my opinion. When a product doesn’t work for us, we should ask why and do our due diligence in finding that answer. That is what Daniel Duchaine did!

Probably the greatest know text by Dan Duchaine is the Underground Steroid Handbook which was first published in 1981 with a Second Edition published in 1989 and updated in 1992. It is this writing that Duchaine is infamously known for. It is this publication in my opinion that also made him an “Enemy of the State”. The original manuscript had 40,000 copies sold. Duchaine never really made any money off this publication. If you have not taken the time to fully read his Second Edition of USH, this is a must and essential information for even the average steroid or TRT user. Other books by Dan Duchaine include, Ultimate Muscle Mass, and Underground Body Opus. We will look at Underground Body Opus Shortly. Duchaine also wrote multiple articles for Muscular Development and Muscle Media 2000.

Diet. Yes, imagine that, a proper diet has to be incorporated with steroid use because they are not magic. HUMMMM! Dan Duchaine was a big proponent of a Keto style diet. This diet is out lined in his book Underground Body Opus: Militant Weight Loss and Recompositing. So what is different about the Body Opus when compared to a Keto Diet? The Body Opus keeps you on a keto diet during the week, with what most of us would consider a Carb Refeed on the weekends. The high carb portion of this diet is by no means a slight of hand or even to be considered a cheat meal. It has a purpose. This part of the diet is meant to boost the bodies rebound effect during which you should become very anabolic. So basically, Monday – Friday you take in 10% less calories that your required maintenance level with zero carbs. Your calories should run 30% proteins and 70% fats. If you do the math, that will equate to approximately 50/50 protein (gm)/ Fat (gm). Saturdays and Sundays you are directed to run up to 10% more calories than you would at a maintenance level. Your calories at this point will be around 60% Carbs, 25% Proteins and 15% Fats. Just like we do with any diet plan, because everyone is different, we have to experiment and see exactly what works best for us as individuals. Some guys will see almost miraculous results as designed straight out of the gate. And for some, the low carb days will be so brutal that they will give up and not continue. Please, if you start this diet, do so with a full understanding that it can be brutal, but that you have control over your destiny and can accomplish anything and everything that you set out to do.

Many of us realize that we can maintain our health and still run some level of AAS without ever coming off, this would include a TRT protocol. If this is true, then why do guys come off steroids? Probably that main reason is that they are young and have not had families yet and they would like to have kids. The fear is that on steroids they will not be able to achieve this. Steroids that are taken to promote muscle growth and overall fitness will deceive the brain into thinking that there is a sufficient amount of testosterone being produced. As a result, the brain decreases its signaling to the testicles. Steroid use can, over time, lead to low sperm counts and anyone that has ran AAS can attest to the fact that it will lead to testicular hypotrophy. But this does not mean that your mate can not get pregnant. You just have to have sex more frequently in an attempt to get pregnant. My opinion of this is that if you are scared that you won’t be able to have kids after running AAS, then you haven’t done your due diligence and research to and should not run steroids. If you decide to come off steroids there is a proper way to do it. Keep in mind that when we do quit taking steroids, there are very real side effects that we can encounter. These can include but are not limited to: weakness, lethargy, depression, injuries, muscle
hypotrophy, and fat accumulation. There are many AI’s. SERM’s and other products including hCG and hMG that can be incorporated into a Post Cycle Therapy Protocol. That being said, the only PCT that I a discussing here is the protocol that Dan Duchaine promoted.
The protocol:

FIND AN IDEAL TIME TO STOP THE DRUGS – This is a time when it seems like everything is perfect. Your diet is controlled, workouts are regular and you are at a happy place in your life.

ALWAYS TAPER THE DOSAGES – Due to the typical shut down that we see with the use of AAS including Testosterone, tapering dosage is seen as necessary. Additionally, if you quit all at once, water retention increased fat retention and depression can set in.

UNLESS YOU ARE STOPPING STEROIDS BECAUSE OF A HEALTH PROBLEM,
TAPER THE INJECTABLES FIRST.
This tapering will be dependent on type of injectable AAS that is being used and the frequency of injections. Overall, you should go from the dosage rate you are at to no dose during a four-week period.

TAPER YOUR TABLET DOSAGE DOWN EVERY 3 DAYS.
TAPER THE TOXIC ORALS OUT FIRST
- Orals like Anavar and winstrol can be tapered last, AAS like Anadrol or D-bol should be the first to go.

CONTINUE OR ADD NOLVADEX FOR 3-4 WEEKS AFTER THE STEROID
CESSATION, THEN TAPER THE NOLVADEX OVER A TWO WEEK PERIOD
. This is seen as especially helpful for women athletes since they experience an estrogen rebound upon stopping AAS. elpful for women, as they experience a profound estrogen rebound when stopping. This is not to say that male athletes do not also benefit from Nolva, because if they use HCG to elevate their natural testosterone levels then their estrogen levels will rise as well.

MEN: BEGIN HCG THERAPY AT END OF THE THIRD WEEK OF THE TAPER. 1000 iU every other day

USE EFFECTIVE NON-STEROIDAL ANABOLICS IMMEDIATELY AFTER STOPPING
THE STEROIDS, AFTER THE FOURTH WEEK. T4 will act as anabolic and work well in conjunction with Clenbuterol. (100- T4 with 10 mg clenbuterol, daily).
Other non-steroide supplement to take include:
Co-enzyme B12 (two 5mg oral doses daily).
DICOBALENE-V brand by Jenapharm USA
L-Dopa, 1gram before bed, or CATAPRES, .3mg, also before bed to elevate
GH output (athletes with low blood pressure should avoid Catapres).
Arginine and Ornithine taken orally are not effective at elevating GH.

ELIMINATE MOST JOINT STRESSING COMPOUND MOVEMENTS FROM WEIGHT
TRAINING FOR FOUR TO SIX WEEKS AFTER STOPPING STEROIDS.

MODIFY YOUR TRAINING TO STIMULATE NATURAL TESTOSTERONE
PRODUCTION. Research has shown that exercises of five repetitions, with a three-minute rest between sets results in the body secreting the most amount of testosterone. Workout sessions should not be more than an hour at a time. It is possible to have more than one workout session per day with this method.

Daniel Duchaine didn’t have a very good performance as a bodybuilder. This is what triggered him to begin researching the very steroids that he was using to figure out why others could garner results better than he could. It was this very research that brought about “The Underground Steroid Handbook” (USH) and the Infamous Title “Steroid Guru”. If you haven’t done so already you need to read USH. He has written countless articles and in addition to USH he wrote “Underground Bodyopus: Militant Weight Loss & Recomposition. This book can help guide not only a beginner but a more advanced bodybuilder to results that they may not otherwise have the ability to achieve. The basics of this book are a Keto diet with a two day refeed. This method can still applied today. His take on post cycle therapy is also still a base for pct even though there are many ways to come off AAS. Or a beginner this is probably not a bad road to take. There can be volumes of discussion on his method for the use of hCG. Many people have opinions on how it should be used. Some use it during a cucle which in my opinion is a waste. I lean more towards the use of hCG at the end of a cycle (3 weeks max left) and stopping its use within two weeks of the cycles end.
