Although this episode happened a very long time ago, bizarre and unfortunate instances with mislabeled or wrong drugs have been purchased before on the net or streets. In this particular episode it involves what was originally expected to be Deca.. Yup, the street name Deca for Nandrolone as most call it because of its assigned trade name, This is why many users anymore often resort to calling drugs by there first name because it would sound silly walking around asking for Enanthate. Meh, Deca has always been the exception, same for Viagra, Cialis and even Accutane, we all know what the person is referring too, right? So, deca it is and shall remain as is.. Same for the others.
This older article was brought back to light by the writes over at Ergo-log news site, they figured it would be a great conversation piece.. Check out what their columnist put together below -
This deca is not going to make your muscles grow
Although the decanoate part of the nandrolone decanoate molecule does not have an anabolic effect, in the steroid scene deca, short for decanoate, has become synonymous with nandrolone decanoate. From a chemical point of view, that is of course strange. It does explain however a bizarre medical case involving a British bodybuilder, which doctors published long ago in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Although the affair dates back to 1992, we still wanted to share it with you.
A different kind of decanoate
The main character in the case study, was a 30-year-old man who bought nandrolone decanoate on the black market. Well, he thought so. However, the ampoules he had received contained haloperidol decanoate, not nandrolone decanoate.
This deca is not going to make your muscles grow
"If decanoate is printed on it, it will make you grow", the man must have thought. To be completely sure that this muscle growth would actually take place, the man also took the antihistamine cryptoheptadine [structural formula on the right]. Cryptoheaptadine stimulates appetite.
Haloperidol decanoate is an injectable antipsychotic. After injection, enzymes slowly cut off the decanoate part of the molecule, releasing the active haloperidol compund. Haloperidol blocks dopamine receptors in the brain and thereby reduces psychotic symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations. After injection, the substance remains active for about a month.
Side effects
If psychiatrists want to suppress psychotic symptoms, they prefer to use drugs other than haloperidol at first. Haloperidol has a relatively large number of side effects, which patients experience as extremely unpleasant. Patients become restless and usually suffer from an uncontrollable urge to move. Paradoxically, haloperidol makes drowsy and sleepy at the same time.
Those were exactly the side effects that the bodybuilder experienced. After his injection, he first slept for a few days, and then he had a severe urge to move for several weeks. For that reason, and because the man faced paralyzing fear that the side effects would be permanent, the doctors decided to treat him in the day care center of a psychiatric center.
The episode had a traumatizing effect on the bodybuilder. "While the physical symptoms presented no further problems, they continued to have persistent reactive psychiatric difficulties, with loss of confidence and low self-esteem for at least the next 9 months", the doctors wrote.
